I’m Thankful For My Insanity (Thanksgiving 2015)

November 27, 2015

A couple weeks ago, I shared my Thanksgiving pledge – 4 simple rules that I follow as a way to get through this food-based holiday without gorging myself. I’m happy to share: they worked!

One of the rules was to exercise on Thanksgiving. So I did the Louisville Turkey Trot in Colorado (where I was spending turkey day at my sister’s place). It’s a 5k run. I’ve done 5k runs before – including the Louisville Turkey Trot twice before – but NEVER in 23 degree weather, while it was snowing!

STAIR TRAINING 101: Want To Compete In A Stair Race? Here’s What You Need To Know

November 24, 2015

Stair racing is extraordinarily difficult. These races, up the stairs in skyscrapers, are downright grueling. But they’re also ridiculously rewarding, and the feeling of overlooking an entire city, knowing that you climbed to your perch, is second-to-none.

I’ve been asked (a couple times) to share how to train for a race. I’m happy to share what I know! I’m not the fastest guy at these events, but I’m experienced. I’ve done three dozen of them, in nearly a dozen cities across the country, all in the past few years, and I started as a complete newcomer. I’ve learned a lot! Here’s what you need to know – and how to prepare!

Cranberry Pineapple Salsa

November 23, 2015

Thanksgiving is coming up, and for the past couple years, I’ve been invited to a Thanksgiving potluck the Sunday before the real Turkey Day. My friends Steve and Denise throw it, and it’s a good time. This year, I brought the cranberries, and I wanted to do something a little different. So I made…

Farting Dogs and Rotten Fish

November 18, 2015

It’s rare that I write about candy, but I can’t resist sharing this story.

Let me introduce you to my friend Martin. I met Martin through stair racing, so it’s appropriate that is picture was taken on the roof, after our 54-story stair race last weekend. Martin is speedy, too – he finished 3rd overall! (I finished 41st, out of 166.)

Martin is Danish, and came all the way from Denmark to compete in this race. And he brought me a very thoughtful, completely awesome gift! Read the rest of this entry »

A Skinned Knee, A Forgotten Phone, and a Damn Fast Climb (2015 Los Angeles CF Climb Race Recap)

November 16, 2015

There is nothing more exhilarating than standing on a skyscraper roof, looking for miles in every direction, after a stair climb race. I get the same chills every time, including this past Saturday, when I competed in the Los Angeles CF Climb for the third consecutive year.

It was an eventful, satisfying morning, and one that started on the wrong foot, when I arrived at the race and realized Read the rest of this entry »

It’s the 2015 Keep It Up, David THANKSGIVING PLEDGE!

November 11, 2015

THANKSGIVING IS TWO WEEKS AWAY! My mouth is already watering when I think about turkey… stuffing… gravy… cranberries… pie… And pictures like this, featuring my Thanksgiving plate from last year, are no help whatsoever:

Thanksgiving is a fantastic holiday for gathering with family and friends, sharing good times, and honoring all the things we’re grateful for. It also can be an engraved invitation to gorge yourself silly, pass out into a food coma, and, if you’re trying to lose weight, undo weeks of hard work.

But it doesn’t have to be. I have a simple pledge that I use to negotiate Thanksgiving Day, and guess what? IT WORKS! It allows me to eat whatever I want, without feeling guilty, and without ever having to go change into a pair of fat pants. Read the rest of this entry »

My FINAL Fundraising Request of 2015… PLUS, I Find Stairs Wherever I Go!

November 5, 2015

I’m in the home stretch of my 2015 race calendar! I’ve competed in THIRTEEN RACES so far this year – ten stair races, plus three runs (see the full list here). I only have two more left! One is in this towering downtown Los Angeles skyscraper…

November Weigh-In Results and Workout Progress Report… And October Too!

November 4, 2015

I have an official weigh-in at the start of every month. I share the results right here, along with data about my exercise accomplishments, but I didn’t share anything last month. It slipped through the cracks. Whoops! So now I have two months to catch you up on. Let’s dig in!

It’s a mixed bag of good and could-be-better news, but the overall headline is: Read the rest of this entry »

My Halloween Weekend… In Pictures

November 2, 2015

I’ve got lots of photos, so I’ll try to keep my words brief. (Good luck to me – brevity isn’t my strong suit!) First, the biggest headline: I didn’t dress up for Halloween. I actually haven’t dressed up since 2011, when I went to a party as Jared Fogel (the Subway guy). Now, just thinking of him makes me shiver in repulsion and disgust, so… man oh man, do I know how to pick a costume!

The most seasonally festive thing I did this weekend was go to…
