I Play With My Food, Part IV: Cantaloupe Construction!

September 30, 2014

I spent a half hour cutting an entire cantaloupe in rectangular planks. I tried to make each one the exact same size.

Have I officially gone mad? Probably. Was it an enjoyable activity? You bet! Cutting the planks was one thing…but what I did with them next is what’s really exciting! Read the rest of this entry »

Looking Forward…to TWO Races in Chicago!

September 29, 2014

It’s been over a week since my last stair race (my very successful ascent up the US Bank Tower). This past week has definitely been an “off” week for me. There was lots of food I wouldn’t otherwise eat. (I even visited a drive-thru. Or two.) I skipped workouts so my body could recover. I’m just now starting to get back into the swing of things. I worked out both days this weekend, and ate great as well. I’m starting to get focused again… and I have a LOT to focus on, because my next race is a little over a month away! And it’s in a completely different time zone!

I announced last month that I’m heading to Illinois for SkyRise Chicago, the stair race at the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. And now I have another exciting race announcement: I’m Read the rest of this entry »

Cherry Mustard Broccoli Salad…OR SIDE!

September 25, 2014

Here’s a good, easy, versatile recipe with lots of wiggle room for substitutions and customization. I used that wiggle room a couple times while putting this together! It’s called Cherry Mustard Broccoli Salad, and it starts with… broccoli.

All of you with keen observation skills have noticed that there is also cauliflower in that steamer basket. I was gonna just use broccoli, but Read the rest of this entry »

New Roommate AND Recovery Time

September 24, 2014

I have a new roommate. In the past, I’ve been known to make this pronouncement whenever I find Brussels sprouts on the stalk, but this time around, my roommate is a living, breathing thing. Meet Luna:

I’m watching Luna for a couple weeks while Read the rest of this entry »

Race Recap: Stair Climb For Los Angeles 2014

September 22, 2014

At one point during the day on Friday, I collapsed onto the floor, and, for a few minutes, I couldn’t have gotten up to save my life.

Every muscle burned. My heart was pounding close to 170 beats per minute. I could have filled a bucket with the sweat dripping down my face and soaking my clothes.

This is what happens to me at the end of a stair race, and on Friday, I raced up the tallest building on the west coast. The building is Read the rest of this entry »

Box Jump Challenge

September 17, 2014

Have you heard about this heat wave in southern California? It’s been over 100 degrees in my next of the woods for the past week. Good times. Welcome to September! The ridiculous heat thwarted my workout plans the other day. I was planning on doing my final stair workout before my next race on a new-to-me public stairway in the Hollywood Hills (that ends down the street from a big time celebrity’s home!), but I didn’t wake up early enough to go before it got too hot. And it got too hot at, like, 9am.

So, I had to improvise. Read the rest of this entry »

My Current Favorite Workout Songs

September 11, 2014

Every once in a while, I share what I’m listening to on my iPod. Music is an important part of my workouts, and I’m always on the hunt for new songs and artists to throw into the mix. This post has some of my current favorites. Maybe one (or more) of these will strike your fancy! And maybe you can share, in the comments section, the songs you love!

I might as well call this list the Read the rest of this entry »

Four Times Up the Wells Fargo Center. Yup, FOUR!

September 9, 2014

I wasn’t planning on last night’s workout being a record-breaker, but it was. I love a nice surprise! Especially when, as I mentioned in my last post, I’m getting back on track after a less-active-than-normal week. My successes last night were in the stairwell of the Wells Fargo Center downtown:

A Week With My Mom

September 8, 2014

What a fun week it’s been. My mom has been in town since Tuesday, and she’s leaving today. She’s on a little tour visiting most of her children – first my sister and her family in Colorado, then me, and next up to the bay area to see my brother and his family. (I have a sister in Chicago that didn’t make this itinerary, but they saw each other a few weeks ago).

The Los Angeles leg of her tour coincided with a wedding we were both invited to (my dad was invited as well, but he was unable to come out), so on Saturday, we got spiffied up to celebrate the nuptials of our friends Greg and Ali. I clean up good!
