An Impromptu Hike, From Summit to Sea and Back Again… and With Lots of Stairs!

June 19, 2018

I needed a change of scenery on Saturday. I wanted to go someplace new, see something different, have an experience. So I jumped in my car and headed south to Orange County, and ended up on an epic hike that took me from mountaintop to beach, and up and down plenty of stairs!

I researched hiking options before I left, and settled on Aliso Peak, a small mountain in Laguna Beach. I liked the idea of Read the rest of this entry »

More Photos From a VERY Active Weekend in San Francisco

April 24, 2018

One might rightfully assume that climbing the stairs in a 48-story skyscraper twice (read details here) would be a satisfactory workout for the day, but NOT FOR US! When we left the Fight For Air Climb in San Francisco, it wasn’t to go have brunch or head home. We headed to a famous stadium, where we… continued to exercise!

Hiking In Scorched Wildfire Country

March 15, 2018

Wildfires have in the news recently, thanks to multiple fires all over southern California. There are wildfires in and around Los Angeles almost every year, and I’m always riveted by the news coverage of how they spread and how firefighters battle them. I recently went hiking in an area ravaged by wildfire, and… Wow. Just wow. Read the rest of this entry »

I Followed Up a Horribly Challenging Race with a 3-Hour Hike… On the Very Same Day!

It’s at the edge of the Angeles National Forest, and after just a little while, you’re surrounded by nature and quickly forget you’re next to the second-largest city in the country. But we came to do more than just hike. We came to conquer this hill:

Photographs don’t do this hill justice. It’s steep. For about a tenth of a mile, it shoots up at Read the rest of this entry »

There’s a Shipwreck Near Los Angeles… and You Can Hike To It!

October 5, 2017

South of Los Angeles is a community called Rancho Palos Verdes. It’s a beautiful, affluent area, built on big bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. And, at the base of the bluffs, there’s a shipwreck that dates back 56 years!

It looks like I’m standing on a rusty tank, but it’s actually the Read the rest of this entry »

The. Hardest. Hike. I’ve. Ever. Done. PERIOD.

August 9, 2017

My last post ended in a cliffhanger: thanks to the cancellation of the Red Bull 400, I had some free time in Whistler, British Columbia, as well as the desire to do something physically challenging. That desire was fulfilled… by doing the most difficult hike I’ve ever done. And with a great group of friends!
