We Have A NEW Winner! Plus, Kitchen Sink Smoothie

April 28, 2012

Happy Saturday!

So I have bad news and I have good news. The bad news is that Randi Marie Simpson failed to come forward to claim the Edible Arrangements fresh fruit bouquet that she won yesterday. As I explained when I announced the contest, and again when the winner’s name was announced, the winner has 24 hours to email me to claim their prize. Unfortunately, Randi didn’t email me – and I checked my Spam folder and everything.

The good news is that someone else now has a chance of winning the fresh fruit bouquet! I went through the same process as before with the random number generator at random.org, and a new winner was generated. That number was 81, and the 81st comment belonged to…

GEORGINA FIGUEROA!  Yay, you won! Here’s Georgina’s comment:

Congratulations!

Same rules apply: This post went live at 7:15pm PST on Saturday, April 28th, and you have 24 hours (until 7:15pm PST on Sunday, April 29th) to send me an email at keepitupdavid@gmail.com to claim your prize. Remember how, when you left the winning comment, you had to provide an email address? You gotta email me from that address (which I can see but no one else can) so I know it’s you and not an imposter!

I’m tired of picking winners. Georgina, come claim your prize!!!

**Update: Georgina has claimed the prize. Congrats, Georgina!**

Moving on…

I’ve never been a huge smoothie person. I’ve enjoyed them occasionally, but it rarely crosses my mind to make my own smoothies in my own kitchen. That might be starting to change. And I have frozen fruit to blame thank.

A few weeks ago, I came across strawberries at a ridiculous prize: $1.25 for a one-pound container. I spent $5 and bought four – I couldn’t pass it up! Unfortunately for me, it was one day after a big visit to another supermarket, and I was already loaded up on fruit. So I washed and hulled all 4 pounds of strawberries, put them in a big container, and froze ‘em.

Earlier in the week, it occurred to me that the strawberries would make a great base for a smoothie. They’d both flavor and chill the smoothie at the same time, and I do love when fruit is capable of multitasking. So I made a smoothie. And I enjoyed it.

Yesterday, I made another smoothie. And I jotted down what I used to make it, so I could share with you.

There are a bazillion smoothie recipes out there, and I didn’t look at a single one. I pulled out all my fruits and vegetables and tossed a bunch of stuff in, including a few things that probably have no right being in a smoothie. But that’s the joy of smoothies (and why I call mine Kitchen Sink Smoothies): You can throw pretty much anything in there, and add enough fruit, and it’ll taste great! I have a hunch I’ll never make a smoothie the same way twice.

I started with about 1/4 cup skim milk. Then I added a handful of frozen strawberries, and a handful of frozen grapes (which taste awesome frozen; they’re a great snack all by themselves). Then I went through my veggies to see what was closest to going bad. I settled on 3 roma tomatoes and a zucchini. I roughly chopped ‘em up, and added them in. And, just to bulk it up with veggies a little further, I added 2 baby eggplant and a radish (I thought the heat might be a nice touch). Then I added more sweetness by throwing a pear and kiwi into the mix.

The end result, as shown above, wasn’t sickly sweet. It was perfect. Couldn’t taste the zucchini or eggplant (the two items I was most skeptical about), and because of all the veggies, I didn’t worry about it being a huge calorie bomb, like some smoothies can be (especially at juice bars). It ended up being a lot of smoothie, too – I was drinking smoothie for half the day, without any guilt at all!

I’m already thinking about what I can use in my next smoothie.

Keep it up, David!

Who Won the Giveaway? WAS IT YOU?

April 27, 2012

The Big Day Has Arrived!

In total, there were 911 entries in my Edible Arrangements giveawayNINE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN! That’s a lot of entries! That’s hundreds and hundreds more than I was ever expecting! I guess a lot of people really like Edible Arrangements, and I don’t blame them. I do too!

So which one of those 911 blog comments is the winning one? I used random.org to pick a winner. First, I plugged in the parameters: I wanted a random number between 1 and 911.

Then, I clicked on that “Generate” button, and here’s the random number that was generated for me:

SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHT!

So who had the 788th comments? One-handed drum roll, please…

The 788th comment belonged to… RANDI MARIE SIMPSON!

Let’s see Randi’s winning entry, shall we?

Even though the rules said you could enter up to three times (provided you ‘liked’ and followed Edible Arrangements on Facebook and Twitter), Randi only entered once. And that was all she needed!

LISTEN UP, RANDI! This post went live at 3am PST on Friday, April 27th, and you have 24 hours (until 3am PST on Saturday, April 28th) to send me an email at keepitupdavid@gmail.com to claim your prize. Remember how, when you left the comment, you had to provide an email address? You gotta email me from that address (which I can see but no one else can) so I know it’s you and not an imposter!

I’ll reply to your email, confirming that it was received, and I’ll introduce you to the folks at Edible Arrangements, who will help you claim the prize.

If I don’t get an email by 3am on Saturday, than I’m picking another number and someone else will win your fresh fruit bouquet from Edible Arrangements! And you don’t want that to happen!

Congrats, Randi! I hope you enjoy the prize and I hope your mom likes it too!

A big thanks to everyone that entered – I know that a lot of you were first-time visitors to Keep It Up, David, and I hope you stop by again! I got a lot to say, and I’m not afraid to say it!

Keep it up, David!

Enter My 400th Post GIVEAWAY!

October 21, 2011

Yes, this is technically my 401st post.  But I’m still celebrating my 400th, which you can read here, and you can’t stop me!

It’s been forever since I’ve done a giveaway, and an occasion like reaching my 400th post is too good to let pass without doing something to acknowledge and thank all my lovely, supportive, insightful, and terrific readers.

Here’s what I’m giving away:

An iTunes gift card worth $20!  Winner takes all.  You can spend it on music for your workouts, healthy living apps for your iPhone or iPad, or buy an the entire 4th season of Jersey Shore (and still have a penny left over) – do whatever you want with it!

Like I mentioned yesterday, I’m honored that so many people have been stopping by and (hopefully) enjoying Keep It Up, David lately, and I come to you for help in spreading the word further.  Simply put, I want your help promoting my blog.

Here’s how this’ll work:

Go tell someone about Keep It Up, David.  How you do it doesn’t matter.  Pick up the phone, send an email, text, or tweet, post a link on your Facebook or Google+ wall, have a singing telegram delivered, approach a total stranger in the sidewalk… you know how to reach the people in your life better than I do!

What you tell them is also none of my business.  I hope you’ll share your honest opinion, even if that means directing people here because you think it’s the worst blog ever.  Simple things to do might include providing a link to www.keepitupdavid.com, or recommending my pages on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+.  You might point out that a simple way to see what I’m all about is by visiting my The Story So Far… and My Favorite Posts pages.  Again, it’s up to you.

Once you somehow spread the word, come back to THIS POST (entries submitted any other way, like via Twitter or Facebook, won’t be in the running) and leave a comment, telling me about it.  You can be as brief as you’d like.  I don’t need links or proof.  I believe in your honesty, so you’re on the honor system.  You’re honest and honorable, right?

If you choose to go nuts and use multiple forms of communication to tell everyone you know, than that’s wonderful, but I’m gonna limit entries per person to THREE.

Deadline for entries is Friday, October 28th at 12:01am, Pacific Standard Time.  On Friday, I’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner and announce it on the blog.  The winner will have 48 hours to email me with their mailing address at keepitupdavid@gmail.com to claim their prize.  If they don’t email in time, I’ll draw another winner, and reset the clock at 48 hour, and so on.

Questions?  Comments?  GOOD LUCK!

Oh – I should mention that I’m not in cahoots with iTunes.  I purchased the gift card myself.

Before I sign off, I just want to mention how happy I am that it’s Friday!  I determined earlier this week that Friday would be a rest day, and tonight I had a great workout, for the sixth day in a row.  I did 5 minutes of warm-up on the treadmill, then 40 minutes with weights (and I threw in my 18 burpees, too), and then 12 minutes of brisk and steep inclined walking on the treadmill.  I am exhausted.

Keep it up, David!

And The Target Gift Card Goes To…

March 6, 2011

We have a winner!

This morning I figured out who won my Birthday Giveaway Contest and the $10 Target Gift Card prize!

There were 49 entries.  I had mentioned in the contest rules that I would be disqualifying anyone that didn’t follow the directions, but today I realized that cross-referencing 49 entries between the Comments Section and the Facebook Page would be a giant pain in the ass.  Shoulda thought of that earlier.  So I found a way to make it easier.  I decided that everyone that entered would get a number, based on the order of their blog comments.  Then, the random number generator would pick one of the numbers.  Whatever number is picked, I’ll cross-reference that entry.  If they followed the rules, then Congrats! They’re the winner!  If they didn’t, it sucks to be them, because they don’t win and I generate another random number, and so on.

So – I established the parameters at the random number generator, which I found here:

And then I clicked the “Generate” button…  can you feel the suspense?  I could barely contain myself!  The winning number is…

FOURTEEN!

The fourteenth comment was left by none other than GlenSmith501, who wrote:

Let’s check the Facebook page, and make sure he left the same message there:

WE HAVE A WINNER! Congratulations, Glen!  I’m going to send you a message on Facebook, to we can figure out how I’m gonna get your prize to you, so be on the lookout for that.

And what an insightful and thought-provoking comment you left – I like it a lot.

A big thank you to everyone that entered.  I really enjoyed reading your entries, which ranged from poems to birthday greetings to recipes and more.  Congratulations to everyone that shared their own weight-related successes and a heartfelt thanks to everyone who said so many nice things about me.  Sometimes I still can’t wrap my head around the thought that I’m an inspiration to others, mainly because my own journey is still very much a difficult day-to-day process, but I never tire of reading compliments, that’s for sure!  The idea that there are people out there that read this blog and are inspired to make changes in their own lives truly renders me speechless.  All I can say, to all of you, is Keep it up!  And the same goes for me…

Keep it up, David!

Enter and Win My Birthday Giveaway!

March 2, 2011

My birthday is coming up.  This Saturday, March 5, I will be turning 32 years old.  And this year, I’m not gonna be the only one getting presents… one of the ways I want to celebrate is to give something away to one of the readers of this very blog!  It’s time for… My Birthday Giveaway Contest!

First, to answer the question that’s been on everyone’s mind (for the past 20 seconds):  What can I win? Drum roll, please…  it’s a…

FREE TEN DOLLAR TARGET GIFT CARD!

I love Target.  I don’t know anyone that doesn’t love Target.  There are Targets all over the place.  They have a great website.  These four reasons made a Target Gift Card an easy decision when planning this giveaway.

I suppose, in the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that Target did not furnish this card, nor are they a sponsor of this blog (although they are more than welcome to contact me regarding sponsorship opportunities at the email address listed on my Contact page!).  I purchased this gift card, with my own cash money, with the express purpose of giving it away.  Possibly to YOU.

Which brings me to how to enter.  Read carefully!

1) Go to the Keep It Up, David Facebook page.

2) Post a comment on my wall.  It can be anything you want: a comment, a poem, some song lyrics, a single word, your favorite healthy recipe, a phrase that sounds dirty but really isn’t, anything.  Be creative!  (You’ll note that in order to post something, you’ll have to “like” the page by clicking the “Like” button at the top.  If you already “like” the page, and have for a while, than my thanks to you, and look at that!  You just skipped a step!)

3) Come back here, and post THE EXACT SAME thing as a Comment on this blog post.

4) That’s it!  You’ve officially entered!  I will be cross-checking all entries, so don’t think you’ll get away with just posting on either Facebook or the blog.  Anyone that doesn’t post on both will be disqualified.  If you don’t post THE EXACT SAME thing on both, you’ll be disqualified too!  If you’re not on Facebook, than you better sign up, because there’s no other way that you’re gonna win!

The DEADLINE is 11:59pm (Pacific Standard Time) on Friday, March 4, 2011. That’s the last minute I’ll be 31 years old.

Now you’re thinking, “Great! I’ve successfully posted something witty and insightful on both the Keep It Up, David Facebook Page, and as a Comment on this blog post – how will he determine a winner?”  That’s a GREAT question.

Everyone that enters will be assigned a number, based on the order in which your entry is received.  Then, after the deadline passes, I’ll use the Random Number Generator at random.org to pick a winner!  I’d like to say that this will happen on Saturday, March 5, but that’s my birthday, so in all actuality it may not happen until Sunday, March 6.  Hopefully the suspense won’t prevent you from sleeping!

Once I have a winner, I’ll contact you via email to figure out delivery.  You’ll have the choice of a e-GiftCard, which will arrive in your inbox within a matter of hours (but can only be used at Target.com), or an actual gift card that I can pop in the mail.  Decisions, decisions!

Good luck – and tell all your friends!

Keep it up, David!

Valentine’s Chocolate Update

February 24, 2011

Earlier this month, I held my first-ever contest and giveaway, where I invited readers to guess what was in the Valentine’s Day care package that my mom was sending me.  Over 30 of you entered, and I determined that Cheri, in British Columbia, Canada, came closest, by accurately guessing that my mom would send me homemade cookies, and they’d be heart-shaped.  The care package also included some heart-shaped chocolates, which I re-packaged with the cookies, and shipped to Cheri as her prize.  She was really excited to win – she’s never won anything before – and so you gotta love that!  I’ve exchanged a few emails with Cheri since she won the contest, and she told me a little about one of her weight-loss strategies, and allowed me to share it all with you…  You’re definitely going to be intrigued, like I was… so keep reading… but first, the candy/cookies update:

Cheri received the package, and since she runs a day care, she divvied up the chocolates along the kids she looks after.  The cookies didn’t survive the trip (I blame me for packing them poorly).  She says the chocolates didn’t last more than 5 minutes, but she managed to snap a few pictures before they were completely devoured:

Fantastic pictures, Cheri – thank you!

When she was sending me her address, Cheri dropped this little phrase into her email which I read, then immediately re-read  three more times:

“I was hypnotized 2 weeks ago, so no longer eat chocolate…”
.
OK.  You know how dogs, when they hear the word ‘play’ or ‘treat’ or whatever word get them excited, perk their ears up, and cock their head, and just stare?  That was me after reading that sentence.  I’ve heard of people using hypnosis to quit smoking (and actually know someone who’s done it), but I haven’t met anyone who has used hypnosis to help with weight loss.  I had to know more, so I asked Cheri to elaborate.  Cheri has gained and lost weight before, and is currently trying to lose it again.  She wrote:
“I know the struggle of weight loss.  I weighed 180lbs, and went down to 125lbs.  Then, after my second daughter, I went up to who knows what, then started weight loss again at 185lbs, and then have lost 25lbs so far.”
.
First of all, congrats, Cheri!  25 pounds is fantastic – Keep It Up!  And for my other Canadian readers, as well as my readers in every other country in the world, 25 pounds is 11.34 kilograms – not too shabby!
.
Here’s why Cheri turned to hypnosis.  In her own words:
“As for hypnotized, it was my first time. I figured I would give it a try, and anything is worth trying at least once, and if it worked, then great.  I went in with the positive attitude that it would work. I had her focus on not eating chocolate & drinking pop, which of course, at that time, I did daily (and craved like crazy).  The session lasted just over an hour.  I left that day no longer craving chocolate, and no longer drinking pop.  I just don’t want it.  If I even think of eating it, its almost like there is a mental block that allows me to rethink [that] I actually don’t want it, and I am able to leave it alone.  It’s been two weeks and I have yet to touch the stuff!
.
I am going to make another appointment, and ask her to make me more aware of stopping eating when I am content… and to not eat when I am not hungry.  The hypnotist said (and I have googled this) that 95% of the people who have been hypnotized for weight loss are successful.
.
My Dad’s wife just went yesterday, so I’m waiting to see how things went for her.  She said that she felt good after it and that the hypnotist said that she went deep. So I would be surprised if she did not have similar results to me.”
.
I’m so fascinated that you’ve undergone hypnosis, Cheri, and thrilled that it’s working for you!  Will you keep us posted after that second appointment?
.
Have you tried anything unique or different in your attempts to lose weight?  How did they work out for you?  If you’re interested in sharing with the Keep It Up, David audience your weight loss stories, drop me a line and tell me about it at keepitupdavid@gmail.com – I’d love to hear from you!
.
OK – I gotta take off… There a very exciting event tonight that I’m participating in… be sure to check back here, because I’ll definitely be writing about it!
.
Keep it up, David!

Announcing… My First CONTEST and GIVEAWAY!

February 10, 2011

Who doesn’t like winning free stuff?  I do, I do! Hopefully you do too, because I’m happy to announce Keep It Up, David’s first ever contest and giveaway!

Here’s the backstory. Last night, I got an email from my mom.  Here’s part of it:

Be on the watch for a Valentine’s box… expected to arrive on Friday.
David, you can share… remember, it’s the thought.  :-)  Not intended to sabotage diet.

Not intended to sabotage diet? I can’t wait!  Whatever could it be?

Here’s where the contest and giveaway part comes into play.  I’m turning my mom’s well-intentioned Valentine’s Day care package into the first-ever prize for a Keep It Up, David reader!  Based on the one clue provided (that the contents are “not intended to sabotage diet”), I’m guessing there’s some unhealthy food items involved, but which ones?  Whoever guesses correctly (or comes closest to guessing) what my mom mailed to me wins the entire contents of the care package.

Just like my mom said in her email to me, I’m not trying to derail anyone’s weight loss attempts or successes.  I just know that, chances are, I won’t want to keep any unhealthy food in my house, and this contest is more fun for me than throwing it away.  Plus, as I’m currently, ahem, between jobs, I don’t have an office to take it to, so sharing is a little trickier for me as well.  If you win, I’m not saying you have to eat it.  You can do with it what you want: eat it, give it away, relish in the joy of winning a contest and then throw it out, melt it down and smear it on your lover’s body… really, it’s up to you.
Here’s some fine print:
  • You can enter by leaving your guess in the comments section of this blog.  BE SPECIFIC.  Entries like “Chocolate” or “Candy” won’t be considered a legitimate entry.  I want brand names or descriptions, i.e. “Milk Chocolate M&M fun size bags” or “chocolate-covered peanut butter hearts.”
  • Keep in mind that the package may contain a number of different items, so perhaps consider making a short list of items as your entry.  If you list everything under the sun, I’ll get annoyed, which could lead to disqualification.   Just so everyone is on a little more level of a playing field (as some of my readers may know my mom), I’ll give you all one hint as to one of my mom’s favorite candies:  It rhymes with Schmootsie Rolls. Put on your thinking caps for that one!
  • Mom, you can’t win, so don’t bother entering.
  • If no one wins outright, then I will use my own discretion to determine who came closest.  When I’ve determined a winner, I’ll contact that person via email (since you provide me an email whenever you leave a comment) to get their mailing address.
  • The deadline for entries will be whenever I get my hot little hands on the actual package, which may be, per my mom’s email, on Friday (tomorrow).

GOOD LUCK!

Keep it up, David!
