2019 is all about racing. I’m celebrating my 40th birthday by competing in 40 races. It’s my #40years40races Challenge!
This challenge is physically exhausting, but it also requires a lot of planning. So I’m thrilled to be 3/4ths done with it, with over four months left in the year!

I had a good, sweaty time taking my friend Geoff’s High Octane class last week, so when he invited me to another workout, I jumped at the chance. All I had to do was show up at Belle Isle Beach on Saturday morning at 8am. Wait, what?

A HIGH-OCTANE WORKOUT. My buddy Geoffrey is a triathlete, a tri coach, and a group fitness instructor. He extended an offer to me last year to come and take one of his classes. Since I’m finally in town, I was able to take him up on his offer.

Surprise, surprise! I ran a 10K race over the weekend! And in a beautiful setting. Check out these views!
There are two countries in that photo. Downtown Detroit, part of the good ol’ U.S. of A., is on the right, while the buildings on the left are in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. HELLO, CANADA! And I’m standing on Belle Isle, in the middle of the Detroit River. Belle Isle was the venue for the race, which makes sense, because the race was called “Escape to Belle Isle.”

Yesterday was a brisk Michigan winter day, with snow everywhere and temperatures in the low 20s, and I started it with a little sprint at 6:45am. I dashed out to the driveway, barefoot and wearing only a T-shirt and underwear, so I could start the car and get the heat pumping while I got dressed.
Crazy as that was, it paled in comparison to happened a few hours later, when I competed in the American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb in Detroit – racing up the stairs to the 70th floor in the Renaissance Center.

Today’s blog post is brought to you by the word “Renaissance.” The word has multiple meanings. It refers to a period of cultural rebirth in European history, stretching from the 14th to 17th centuries, but it also can refer to any period of new growth or renewal of life.
One could argue that, in the past five years, I’ve experienced my own renaissance by embracing fitness and healthy eating, and taking command of my own health. In fact, I’d argue that until I was blue in the face. (And my family and friends will vouch that I’m a stubborn bastard that LOVES a good argument.)
