Put your nerd hats on, folks, because this post is filled with evidence of my nerdiness. (I never take my nerd hat off, by the way.)
Last week, when I was having a hard time, I promised myself that I would go running. It felt great – I ran 2.6 miles and climbed 68 floors of stairs at a local parking garage. (The garage isn’t 68 stories tall, it’s four. I ran it 14 times.) The run felt great, and afterward, I posted this photo on social media:
In addition to providing a much needed boost to my emotional state, that run turned out to be a milestone run. Those 2.6 miles pushed me across a major threshold: Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while now. I’m glad I finally tackled it, because this post will make me feel good, and it’ll make me feel proud, and those are two feelings that I enjoy feeling! It’s also super nerdy, and I love that too!
My last post included a cardio miles update. Like I said in that post, I log every mile I complete doing any form of cardio. I’m up to 1,093.6 miles since I started last summer. That’s a lot of miles! So many miles, actually, that it’s hard for me to comprehend. And so I turn to Google Maps. Ladies and gentlemen, if I left my house and traveled 1,093 miles, I’d be… near the Colorado/Nebraska border!

It’s the start of a new week! I’m feeling pretty good, although last week was kinda… well, I was going to say ‘difficult,’ but that’s not quite the right word, so let’s go with ‘challenging.’ It started off rough. I was continually feeling Read the rest of this entry »

Hey, remember my Cardio to Vegas challenge? In June, I challenged myself to do enough cardio to take me the 274 miles from my home in Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a virtual journey: I logged all the miles I completed running, biking, and on the elliptical, and plotted my progress on a map. It was an awesome and effective challenge – read more about it on my Cardio to Vegas page.
Even though I reached my goal in September, I’ve still been logging the miles I complete during my cardio. They say that old habits die hard, and this is proof! For the first time since reaching my goal, I’ve plotted my progress on a map. Wanna see where I am now?
I’m in Utah!
As of December 1st, I’ve logged a total of Read the rest of this entry »

I’m won’t even try to build the suspense: I MADE IT TO LAS VEGAS! Goal… COMPLETE!
OK, OK, I’m not actually in Las Vegas. I’m writing this post from the comfort of my own home. But, for the past few months, I’ve been working on a cardio challenge that’s basically a virtual run to Vegas. Here’s how it works: I’ve been logging all the miles that I complete doing any kind of cardio (bike, run, elliptical, etc.). My goal? Log 274 miles, the distance between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. As I accumulated those miles, I plotted my progress on a map, and found fun, interesting, or bizarre facts about the places I “reached’ along the way. These are some of my favorite posts, and you can read them all on my CARDIO TO VEGAS page.
My last CARDIO TO VEGAS post (which shared the story of a notorious bootlegger) was almost a month ago. Since then, I’ve been Read the rest of this entry »

Sound the Emergency Nerd Alarm: I’ve made it across the state line! Bye Bye, California… Hello, Nevada!
Before you close this window and resume looking up time-wasting videos on YouTube (this dinosaur prank is my current favorite), let me explain. I have an exciting update on my completely nerdy, super fun CARDIO TO VEGAS fitness challenge. I’m logging all the miles I complete during all my cardio workouts and adding them up, with the goal of reaching 274 miles – the distance between my home in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I’m plotting my progress on a map, and – here’s where my inner nerd really shines – researching all the places I pass along the way. I’m finding fascinating facts and stories about all of them!
Check out my CARDIO TO VEGAS Page for lots more info and all the archives!
When I last left off, Pretty Crane was hellbent on stopping her sister Fancy from marrying Luis, who was scheduled to be executed for the death of Dylan Flood, a crime he did not commit. Oh no wait – that’s what was happening on the soap opera Passions in 2007. When I left off, I had gone 210.15 miles and made it to a rest area in the middle of the Mojave Desert, dozens of miles of anywhere.
To that 210.15, I can add: Read the rest of this entry »

I’m so flippin’ excited to write this post! It’s been about 2.5 weeks since I’ve updated you on my CARDIO TO VEGAS fitness challenge, and that’s a long drought. But I’m here now, and I have a big update. A SUPER big update. A SUPER big, SUPER nerdy update. I don’t wanna waste any more time – let’s get to it!
CARDIO TO VEGAS is my current fitness challenge, where I’m logging the miles I complete during my cardio workouts, and plotting them on a map. My goal is to reach 274 miles, the equivalent of running from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Along the way, I’m putting my nerd hat on and researching fun facts and stories about the places I pass. This post will show that you can find the most incredible, fascinating stories no matter where you look, even if you’re looking in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, keep reading.

The answer to the question in the title is: BE FORGETFUL! That’s what happened today.
I was on my fifth day of working out after recovering from my sprained foot. I was scheduled to have my first session in three weeks with Mo, the personal trainer, so I headed off to Crunch in Burbank (which, unlike the West Hollywood Crunch, never had any salacious displays of showering customers). The Burbank Crunch is located on the top floor of a shopping center that also includes a Barnes & Noble, an AMC multiplex, and a couple restaurants. It’s served by a giant parking garage that also handles parking for the Ikea across the street. I can easily park on the roof of the garage and walk a few feet to get inside Crunch, but I never do that, because A) I’d have to wind my way up through the levels of the garage, which takes time, and B) I prefer the lower levels, as they’re covered, which keeps my car out of the hot sun.
The parking garage has a back entrance that leads directly to one of the lowest floors, and that floor is nearly always empty, so I park there. Which means I then have to take the stairs to get to Crunch (there’s also escalators and an elevator, but I always take the stairs). First there’s these:

READY TO NERD OUT WITH ME? It’s time for a CARDIO TO VEGAS Update! This is my fourth Cardio To Vegas post, and it’s a long time coming. I started writing it about two weeks ago, before spraining my foot, which sidelined my exercise. I actually accumulated more miles after starting this research, but I don’t want this research to go to waste, so I’ll save those for my next update.
I’m getting ahead of myself. What’s CARDIO TO VEGAS, you ask? It’s my current fitness challenge that has me virtually running to Vegas. Here’s how it works: I’m logging all the miles I complete during my cardio workouts, whether it’s on a bike, elliptical, or out on a run. I add these miles up, and my goal is to reach 274 – the number of miles between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I’m plotting my progress on a map, and writing about the places that I ‘visit’ along the way. It’s as nerdy as it sounds, and I love it!
Check out the kick-off post that started the challenge, and read the other updates here and here.
Where am I now? Let’s find out! When I last left off, I had gone 97.8 miles. To that, I can add: Read the rest of this entry »

NERD ALERT! I’ve been scouring the internet doing loads of research, and that means it’s time… for a CARDIO TO VEGAS UPDATE! If you’re late to the party, no worries. Grab a chair and get comfy, and let me tell you all about it. Cardio to Vegas is my current cardio workout challenge. I’m logging the miles that I complete during each and every cardio workout, no matter what type, with the goal of amassing 274 miles – equivalent to the distance between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
I’m plotting my progress on a map, and every time I update that map, I look for fun, interesting, bizarre, or intriguing facts and stories about the city or town that I’ve reached. It’s the ultimate nerd endeavor, as it combines my love of trivia with my love of tracking my exercise efforts, so, really, I’m in hog heaven. I love putting these posts together, and I hope you get a kick out of reading them!
Where did my cardio journey take me this time? Read on! Read the rest of this entry »
