No More #BirthdayBurpees – I’m DONE!

Three Saturdays ago I gave all my friends and readers a chance to give me a wickedly awful birthday present: burpees. I promised to do burpees for every like, share, and retweet of my #BirthdayBurpees posts on social media. And you guys didn’t mess around. I ended up with 1,085 burpees! And, the other day, I finished them all.

I’M DONE WITH BIRTHDAY BURPEES! Let’s break down how I did them.

First of all, that chart is how I kept track of my burpees. Every burpee I did got a dot. All the burpees I did in one day were drawn in the same color. This made them pretty easy to track and count. Here’s a scan of my finished chart:

You can click on this to see it bigger, if you like.

I even did 15 extra burpees, to round it up to 1,000, because why not?

1,100 burpees equals a LOT of dots!

Here’s the day-by-day breakdown:

  • March 5: 120 burpees.
  • March 6: 130 burpees.
  • March 7: 20 burpees. (It was supposed to be a rest day, but I did 20 anyway.)
  • March 8: 180 burpees. (My single-highest count for one day. I did 20 burpees every hour all day long.)
  • March 9: 60 burpees. (Done while running stairs at the Hollywood Bowl.)
  • March 10: 40 burpees.
  • March 11: 100 burpees.
  • March 12: 60 burpees. (With my elevation mask at 12,000 feet.)
  • March 13: 80 burpees. (With my elevation mask at 12,000 feet.)
  • March 15: 30 burpees.
  • March 16: 20 burpees.
  • March 17: 30 burpees.
  • March 18: 30 burpees.
  • March 21: 80 burpees.
  • March 22: 120 burpees. (Finish strong!)

You’ll see I slowed down there towards the end, only doing 20 or 30 burpees a day.  There were two reasons for that: 1) these burpees were wiping me out. I was perpetually sore and exhausted from them, and 2) I wanted to lay off my exercising a little bit that week, to prepare for my San Francisco stair race. Once the race was over, I buckled down and cranked out the last 200.

I should also note that the burpees weren’t the only exercise I was doing. I was also lifting weights, and doing other cardio, including my Bowflex MAX Trainer. One day I took a Slimmons class, and another day, I went downtown to climb stairs in a skyscraper.

This challenge was brutal, folks, and I’m glad it’s over. I’m also glad I did it, and finished, and it should have been hard – I wanted a challenge, after all!

Oh, and by the way, I’m really done. Those #BirthdayBurpee posts are still out there on my social media feeds, and I’m not taking them down, but I’m not doing any more burpees. You had weeks to like and share them, and if you missed your chance, well… you’ll have to wait for next year!

Thanks for the birthday presents, everyone!

Keep it up, David!

Way to go! I have lost 100 lbs in the past year and haven’t done burpees for about 2 years because I abhorred them. I’m working with a trainer and she had me do them as part of our workout on Tuesday. I found they were MUCH easier to do without that extra weight! They still aren’t going to be a favorite of mine, but they are considerably more tolerable now. And, although my birthday is in less than a week, I will not be inviting people to assign me burpees. I’ll leave that to the professional. 😉
