Watch My 5-Minute Presentation on Stair Racing!

In June, I went to the Fitbloggin’ conference in Denver. I had a blast hanging out with a couple hundred other health and fitness bloggers, seeing old friends, and making new ones, too. (Here’s my recap post.)

I WAS A SPEAKER, TOO! I gave a well-received presentation during the keynote event, called Ignite Fitness.

I haven’t talked much about this yet, because I was waiting for the video to go online. THE VIDEO IS NOW ONLINE, and you can watch it RIGHT HERE!

My presentation is only five minutes long, but a lot of time and effort went into preparing for it. I started working on it months before. And that’s because there are strict guidelines for Ignite presentations:

  • As I mentioned, they’re capped at five minutes.
  • You have to prepare a 20-image slideshow.
  • These slides auto-advance during the speech, one every 15 seconds, and you can’t pause them, stop them, start over, etc.

The idea is to use your speech to share a lot of information about a topic in a short amount of time. At Fitbloggin’, mine was one of 12 Ignite presentations, on a huge variety of topics.

I submitted a proposal for my Ignite topic way back in January. All the proposals (almost 30) were thrown up on the Fitbloggin’ website, without the authors’ names, and there was a vote to see which topics people were most interested in. The seven with the most votes won an Ignite slot, and conference organizers selected another seven to round out the evening. Who has two thumbs and got the most votes? This guy. (I’m pointing at myself.)

It was a lot of work building a slideshow, and even more work writing a speech that synced up to it. I wrote, rewrote, edited, and finessed sentences so I could squeeze in as much info as I could, and tried to give every section a fitting, appropriate visual aid in the slideshow. I practiced for weeks, first alone, and then to friends and family. I emailed Kia and Terry, the Ignite coordinators, with a ton of questions, just so I knew exactly how everything would work.

I’d say the effort paid off. I’m thrilled with how it turned out. There were a couple hundred people in the room, and they loved it. In fact, I’m slightly bummed that the video ends a split second before a raucous round of applause (and partial standing ovation!) began.

And now you can see it for yourself!

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, Here’s my Ignite Fitness presentation, called “From Sidewalk to Roof: How to Race Up The Stairs in the World’s Tallest Buildings”:

If you can’t see the video embedded above, here’s the link to watch on YouTube:

I hope you enjoy. Maybe you’ll share it with friends, family, or on social media! (If you do, tag me! My social channels are below!)

Some of the facts and figures in the presentation still astound me. Stair racing has become a very important part of my life, and this video reflects and honors that. I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished… and I’m excited for what’s to come!

Keep it up, David!
