March Workout Calendar and April Weigh-In

April 3, 2014

Physically speaking, March was a very successful month for me. It started with a very challenging stair race in Las Vegas, and ended with another stair race, equally challenging, in San Diego. All in all, I exercised 25 out of 31 days in March, and I know this because I log all my workouts on my calendar.

March Weigh-In AND My Next Two Races

March 10, 2014

Yikes! I’m over a week late with my March weigh-in results! I didn’t actually weigh myself until the 4th, after getting back from Las Vegas, and I delayed this post to get all three of my Vegas posts written and published (read them here, here and here).

Let’s not delay things any longer!

I stayed even. I’ll take it. Maintaining is a win! My weight Read the rest of this entry »

Hiking Buddy AND February Weigh-In

February 5, 2014

I had a new hiking buddy a few days ago. His name is Jimi.

I got to spend the day with Jimi, and I don’t even know who his owner is. My buddy and neighbor Patrick was dogsitting for a friend of his, but Patrick had to work all day, so I took Jimi. We had a good 90-minute hike in Fryman Canyon, along the very same trail where Read the rest of this entry »

My First Weigh-In of 2014!

January 1, 2014

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has a fantastic 2014. Make it the best year yet!

It’s the first of the month, which means it’s time for my monthly weigh-in. I only have a weigh-in once a month because I’ve learned the hard way that if I weight myself more frequently, I start obsessing over numbers, which leads to undue stress and bad behaviors. Conversely, if I weigh myself less frequently, I start to lose accountability, and that also leads to no good. It was a trial and error process for me to settle on my once-a-month regimen, but it’s been working for me, so I’m gonna stick to it.

By the way, I hide my scale under my bed when I’m not using it (which is most of the time) - out of sight, out of mind!

I weighed myself this morning, and here’s my weight loss chart with the results:

December Weigh-In: My Lowest Weight in Over a Year!

December 2, 2013

Sometimes I don’t look forward to weigh-ins when they happen right after a trip, but that wasn’t the case this weekend. I got home on Saturday evening from 4 days in Colorado, but had a hunch that my weigh-in on Sunday morning would go well. And it did! Check it out!

It’s a New Week. Time to Get Back on Track! (Plus: Weigh-In Results!)

November 4, 2013

Check out what I got in the mail over the weekend – my first ever Keep It Up, David t-shirt!

I designed it myself and ordered it online – primarily because I have two big, exciting stair climb races coming up, and why not do a little self-promotion? Turns out the shirt arrived at a good time. I was in dire need to be reminded of my own motto, because last week was bad. Some things were out of my control, but I made plenty of bad choices too. I needed to get back on track, pronto. Here’s why:

Mid-Month Check-In

October 17, 2013

Who wants a quickie?

I wasn’t planning on blogging today, and waking up with a pounding headache sorta cemented that plan. But then, on a whim, I got on the scale, liked what I saw, and decided to put together a quick post, headache be damned! Read the rest of this entry »

Weight Loss Chart Update – SIX MONTH LOW!

October 2, 2013

Happy October! It’s the beginning of a new month, which means it’s time to update my weight loss chart. I had a hunch my weigh-in would bring good news, after all, I’ve been busting my butt preparing for last week’s stair climb race, and my eating has been good. Plus, I’ve been having weigh-ins with Mo, my trainer, on the scale at the gym, and I’ve been seeing loses on there. But I don’t use the scale at the gym to update my chart, I use my home scale. So let’s see the results, shall we?

Balls Out! PLUS: September Weight Loss Chart Update

September 3, 2013

Hope everyone had a fantastic long weekend! Mine was pretty nice and relaxing, and I worked out every single day. The highlight of those workouts was on Sunday, when I took a new exercise class that was really fun and effectively brutal.

The class was called BALLS OUT and it was held outdoors at Pan Pacific Park, a big park about 25 minutes south of me in Los Angeles. I heard about it from some Slimmons friends, and for this class, our little Slimmons crowd made up a majority of the 10 or so participants. BALLS OUT is the creation of Wes Ferguson, a West Hollywood-based personal trainer, and he describes it on his website as “a circuit training routine that keeps the heart rate up while using body resistance and a weighted medicine ball to build muscle.” That’s a pretty good description!

A medicine ball is about the size of a basketball, but they’re weighted to be anywhere from a couple pounds all the way up to 16 or 20 lbs. For this class, I worked with a 10-pound ball:

After some initial stretching, Wes led us through all sorts of exercises using the ball. Burpees. Squats. Lunges. Crunches. Three different kinds of pushups. Then more of everything. It was a tough class – very much like a Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Been How Long Since I’ve Blogged?

August 9, 2013

Yikes – it’s been a little over a week since I’ve posted anything on here. I never intended to go quiet for so long, but it just sorta happened. It hasn’t been the greatest week, are struggles are never fun to write about, but these are the sort of weeks where blogging becomes more important. I started this site as a way to stay accountable, so if I don’t own up to what’s been going on, than what’s the point?

In a nutshell: my eating hasn’t been great and I haven’t been exercising, and I’m in a bit of a funk. It can all be traced back to Thursday of last week, when I woke with pain in my foot. It wasn’t unbearable – it felt like perhaps I slept funny on it or something, and I went about my day. That evening, I exercised on a recumbent bike. I thought I’d be fine, since that kind of bike is no-impact and doesn’t requiring putting any weight on my foot.

Big mistake. On Friday, the pain was Read the rest of this entry »
